Operating System

Before you start learning Windows Server Administration, It is very important to understand what and Operating System is, What are types of Operation Systems, Who are the major market holders.


Operating System:

Operating System is a peace of software that act a mediator between you and  physical devices like Laptop, Desktop, Server and of course you mobile devices as well.




Let us say you purchased a new Laptop you will not able to store anything in the disks unless you have some software which will help you interact with the physical disks and that software is you Operating Systems.

Operating Systems can be classifed into two 32 bit and 64 bit, most of the Operating Systems these days are 64 bit.

Operating Systems are of two types Desktop Operating Systems and Server operating systems.

Desktop Operating Systems are the one that we use for our home or office purposes, which means day to day general use and does run any resource intensive and crtical applications.

  • It runs on client devices like desktops, laptops.
  • Used by office users or home users for their day-to-day work.
  • Hosts client applications used to access some services like the internet, emails, etc.
  • This receives services from Server ex: Email.
Ex: Windows11, Windows 10, MacOS, Redhat Client OS, Andrios etc…

Server Operating Systems used to authenticate and process requests made by client systems. The client system can make requests for multiple different kinds of information ranging from web pages to data sets.
  • It is an Operating System designed to use on the Servers.
  • It runs on server devices which will have huge CPU, Memory, and Disk Capacity.
  • Used by organizations to host applications that serve multiple clients.
Ex: Windows Server 2022, 2019,2016, Redhat Server OS, AIX, CentOS etc

It can be used to provide services to multiple clients

It can obtain services from a server.

It can serve multiple clients at a time.

It serves a single user at a time.

It is a complex operating system.

It is a simple operating system.

It runs on the server hardware

It runs on the client devices like laptop, computer etc.

It is an operating system that is designed to be used on a server.

It is an operating system that operates within a desktop.

It provides more security.

It provides less security.

It has greater processing power.

It has less processing power.

It is more stable and highly efficient

It is less stable and less efficient.
